Security reforms ongoing in Nigeria, but much remains – First Lady

Image
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has outlined sweeping security reforms undertaken by the Federal Government, while acknowledging that “there is a lot to be done” to stabilise the country. Speaking in an interview with Fox News Digital on Friday during a week-long visit to Washington, D.C., Mrs Tinubu addressed diplomatic concerns, security cooperation with the United States, and criticism from some U.S. lawmakers over violence affecting Christian communities in Nigeria. Her remarks follow public praise from former U.S. President Donald Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, where he described her as a “very respected woman” while acknowledging her dual role as Nigeria’s First Lady and an ordained pastor. In late 2025, the United States designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged attacks on Christians, a move the Nigerian government rejected as inaccurate, insisting that insecurity in the country is driven by terrorism and c...

Appeal Court affirms suspension of Natasha

Image
The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, on Monday, affirmed the decision of the Senate to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti, holding that the red chamber acted within its powers. In a unanimous judgment delivered by a three-member panel in Natasha’s appeal against the Clerk of the National Assembly and three others, marked CA/ABJ/CV/1107/2025, the appellate court ruled that the suspension did not breach Akpoti-Uduaghan’s parliamentary privileges or constitutional rights. However, the court set aside the contempt proceedings and a N5m fine imposed on the lawmaker over a satirical apology she directed at the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Abba Muhammed held that the Senate President acted within the Rules by denying Akpoti-Uduaghan the opportunity to speak during plenary on February 20, 2025, as she was not seated in her officially allotted seat. The court noted that the Senate President is empowered under the Senate Rules to reallo...

The Boy Who Borrowed Tomorrow

Image
In the quiet village of Luma, tomorrow was kept in a glass jar at the top of the hill. No one was allowed to touch it. Tomorrow, the elders said, must arrive on its own. But Kio had always been curious. One evening, when the moon looked like a silver coin, Kio climbed the hill and opened the jar just a little. A warm wind rushed out, carrying whispers of things yet to be—laughter, rain, and the sound of bells. Before he could close it, a single glowing thread slipped into his hands. The next morning, strange things happened. Flowers bloomed before sunrise. Old wounds healed faster. People smiled for no reason at all. Tomorrow had begun leaking into today. At sunset, the village glowed too brightly, trembling like a candle about to burn out. Kio realized the truth: tomorrow was powerful, but it was not meant to be rushed. He returned the glowing thread to the jar and sealed it. The light faded. Balance returned. From that day on, Kio understood somethingrare—hope is stronges...

Image
Health experts have urged the Federal Government to prioritise antivenom production and availability across hospitals nationwide as Nigeria records 43,000 snakebite cases annually. The senior health professionals stated that limited access to the life-saving treatment continues to fuel snakebite deaths in the country. The experts noted that aside from the scarcity of antivenom, snakebite victims pay between N180,000 and N250,000 per dose, an amount equivalent to about four months’ total income for Nigerians earning the N70,000 minimum wage. The experts who are researchers on Neglected Tropical Diseases explained that weak health systems, poor infrastructure, and shortages of antivenom continue to drive preventable deaths and long-term disabilities, as 50 per cent of health facilities in the country lack the capacity to treat snakebite envenoming. The experts called on the Federal Government to subsidise antivenom costs, import cheaper alternatives while developing local pro...

Guardiola rejects Slot’s ‘style over trophies’ idea

Image
Pep Guardiola has dismissed Liverpool head coach Arne Slot’s assertion that playing entertaining football is more important than winning trophies, insisting that “if you want to be a manager it is better to win trophies, always.” Manchester City travel to Anfield on Sunday to face their long-time rivals in the Premier League, with Arsenal holding a six-point lead at the top and City running out of margin for error. At the start of the season, Liverpool would have expected to be firmly in contention to retain their crown. Instead, they sit in sixth place, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal. Earlier this week, Slot made headlines by saying he would rather see Liverpool play good football than lead them to more trophy wins, BeiN Sports reports on Saturday. Guardiola, whose proactive, possession-based style has helped City lift six Premier League titles, four domestic cups, and their first Champions League trophy in the last decade, emphasized the balance between styl...
