Activist Urges Respect for Geneva Convention Amid Middle East Conflict
Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has publicly called on the United States, Israel and Iran to uphold international humanitarian law during the ongoing conflict. Adeyanju warned that all parties must respect the Geneva Conventions, stressing that children, hospitals and civilian populations must not be targeted or harmed in military operations. His appeal reflects growing international concern over reports of civilian casualties and damage to non‑military infrastructure.
Adeyanju’s remarks underscore a broader global debate about the conduct of the war, which began with joint U.S. and Israeli military action against Iran and has since drawn international criticism. Human rights advocates and observers have repeatedly emphasized that international law requires combatants to distinguish between military targets and civilians, and to ensure proportionality in their use of force. The United Nations and other organisations have similarly called for protection of non‑combatants and adherence to humanitarian norms.
The activist also highlighted the severe humanitarian consequences of the conflict, urging all sides to take immediate steps to prevent further suffering among vulnerable groups. Rights groups have warned that continued escalation in densely populated areas could lead to more displacement, loss of life, and disruptions to essential services like education and healthcare. Adeyanju’s statement aligns with urgent global appeals for de‑escalation and renewed diplomatic dialogue to prevent a broader regional crisis.
