Jide Kosoko: Oloja of Lagos selection is a ‘call to service’

Image
Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has described his selection as the Oloja of Lagos-elect as “a call to service” with exceptional responsibilities. The 72-year-old actor was announced as the Oloja of Lagos-elect on January 24, following his presentation at the palace of the Elereko. In a telephone chat, Kosoko expressed excitement and felt he merited the selection. It’s unclear if his new role will affect his acting career. Fellow actor, Bolaji Amusan (Mr Latin) congratulated Kosoko, stating that his selection signifies Nollywood actors are responsible and contribute to society. “Jide is not the only Prince in Lagos or in the Kosoko family, but because they know his level of intelligence and acceptability, hence his selection as the Oloja of Lagos,” Mr Latin said. Kosoko becomes the second Nollywood actor to ascend a throne, after Okey Bakassi was crowned king of his community in Imo State last year. The position of Oloja of Lagos became vacant after Chief Adebola Ige’s death in ...

Nigerians back Gov Bago on single tenure for govs, President

Image
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State, last month, delivered what could be considered a brutal truth, which many in his position would shy away from. It takes courage for someone in such a privileged position as a governor to admit publicly the failures of a system of government in which he is a beneficiary. Bago who was speaking at the swearing-in of newly appointed commissioners and local government council chairmen, as well as some permanent secretaries andmembers of some Boards and Agencies observed that the fear of losing an election for a second term in office discourages an incumbent governor in his first term from taking some decisive steps that could have promoted development in the state. In essence, the incumbent would not want to take any action that would amount to stepping on the toes of those who may be instrumental to his reelection even if it will be in the interest of the people. According to Governor Bago, “there are some steps I ought to have taken...

Blast at mosque in Nigeria kills 5 and injures more than 30 in apparent suicide attack

Image
LAGOS, Nigeria — A bomb exploded during prayers at a mosque in Nigeria’s northeastern city of Maiduguri on Wednesday night, killing five people in what police described as a likely suicide attack. Police said that 35 people were also injured in the attack. Nahum Daso, spokesperson for police command in the surrounding state of Borno, said in a statement that fragments of a suspected suicide vest were found at the site. The bombing is the latest in a series of attacks in Nigeria’s troubled northern region, where the country is battling multiple armed groups, including Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province. Several thousand people have been killed, with millions displaced from their homes since 2009, according to the United Nations. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the use of suicide bombers has been heavily attributed to Boko Haram, the Islamic militant group that has previously claimed responsibility for many such attac...

China has lifted sanctions from six serving British MPs and peers, Starmer says

Image
China has lifted the sanctions it imposed on serving British MPs and peers in a significant sign of warming relations after Keir Starmer travelled to Beijing for landmark talks with Xi Jinping. Nine UK citizens were banned from China in 2021, including five Conservative MPs and two members of the House of Lords, targeted for highlighting human rights violations against the Muslim Uyghur community. The Guardian revealed last year that the Chinese government was reviewing the sanctions, which it introduced in response to what it called “lies and disinformation” about human rights abuses in Xinjiang. In a round of broadcast interviews in China on Friday, Starmer confirmed that the sanctions on serving MPs and peers would be lifted with immediate effect. He said: “I know that the action taken in relation to our parliamentarians has been a real cause of concern, understandably so. “And therefore I raised that issue whilst I was here, and the Chinese are absolutely clear in respo...

Panama supreme court cancels Hong Kong company’s canal contracts

Image
Panama’s president said ports at each end of the Panama canal would operate as usual after the country’s supreme court ruled the concession held by a subsidiary of a Chinese company was unconstitutional. The court’s decision on Thursday, which helps US attempts to block any Chinese influence over the strategic waterway, immediately drew a sharp rebuke from Beijing. José Raúl Mulino, Panama’s president, said on Friday that until the court’s ruling was executed maritime officials would work with Panama Ports Company (PPC), a subsidiary of Hong Kong’s CK Hutchison, to ensure continuing operations. Once the concession was formally ended, a subsidiary of the Danish logistics company AP Moller-Maersk would operate the ports in a transitional phase until a new concession could be awarded, Mulino said. “Panama moves forward, its ports will continue operating without interruption and we will continue serving the world as the logistics centre of excellence that we are,” Mulino said i...

Mexico president says Trump tariffs on Cuba’s oil suppliers could trigger humanitarian crisis

Image
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has warned that Donald Trump’s move to slap new tariffs on countries sending oil to Cuba could trigger a humanitarian crisis on the island, which is already suffering from chronic fuel shortages and regular blackouts. The US president signed an executive order on Thursday declaring a national emergency and laying the groundwork for such tariffs, ratcheting up the pressure to topple the communist government in Havana. A White House statement cited the Cuban government’s alleged ties to Russia, Hamas and Hezbollah to explain the new tariffs. While the statement did not name Mexico, Sheinbaum’s government has been the top supplier of oil to the island since 2025, surpassing Russia and Venezuela. Sheinbaum said on Friday that her government would seek more information about the tariffs from the US state department, while looking for alternative ways to provide humanitarian aid to the Cuban people. “We will seek a wa...

Women’s Champions Cup final: Arsenal chase more glory against ‘intense’ Corinthians

Image
Renée Slegers praised the impact of trailblazing hijab-wearing footballer Nouhaila Benzina after Arsenal’s defeat of Moroccan side AS Far earned them a place in Sunday’s Champions Cup final against Corinthians. Asked about the impact of Benzina competing in the new cross-continental club competition in London, with no hijab-wearing players currently playing in the Women’s Super League, Slegers said: “The strength of football in society is that football is for everyone. It’s really good that we have role models in all possible ways to show that football is for everyone. That just makes me happy. It’s important. There are so many examples and different ways of how we can show that football is for everyone. This is one of them, so that’s great.” More widely, the Arsenal manager said the opportunity for clubs from continents much further behind the development of women’s football in Europe and the US to showcase their leagues, countries and continents “means a lot”. She said: “...

Elena Rybakina rocks Aryna Sabalenka to grab first Australian Open triumph

Image
Elena Rybakina had plenty of reasons to lose faith in her latest pursuit of a second grand slam title. She had played well for so much of the Australian Open final but, just as was the case in their final here three years ago, as Aryna Sabalenka began to impose herself in the match, Rybakina lost all control. Trailing 0-3 and 30-30 on her serve in the final set, the Kazakhstani’s chances were fading quickly. Although Rybakina is one of the least expressive tennis players to ever reach these stages, her reserved persona belies the grit at the heart of her success. The fifth seed brilliantly drew on her inner fire to produce the one of the great recoveries of her career, finding a way through from a break down in the final set to clinch her first Australian Open title with a brilliant 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over the world No 1. This victory confirms a development that has been clear for some time: Rybakina is the in-form player in women’s tennis. The 26-yea...

Niger’s military ruler vows retaliation after gunfire and explosions heard in capital

Image
Heavy security has been deployed around the main airport in Niger’s capital, Niamey, after overnight gunfire and explosions that the country’s military ruler blamed without evidence on France, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire. The shooting and detonations began shortly after midnight on Wednesday, according to residents of a neighbourhood near the airport, which is next to Base Aérienne 101, a military base previously used by US and then Russian troops. Calm returned about an hour later, the residents told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Videos filmed by local people showed streaks of light in the sky and the sound of loud explosions, while other images showed flames several metres high and charred cars. On state television, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, who seized power in a 2023 coup, accused the presidents of France, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire of sponsoring the attack, and vowed retaliation. “We have heard them bark, they should be ready to hear us roar,” he said, signalling further wor...

South Africa expels top Israeli diplomat over ‘insulting attacks’ on president

Image
South Africa and Israel have engaged in a tit-for-tat expulsion of senior diplomats, after South Africa ordered Israel’s chargé d’affaires to leave within 72 hours, citing “insulting attacks” on South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, on social media. Ariel Seidman, the chargé d’affaires at Israel’s embassy in Pretoria, was declared persona non grata by South Africa’s department for international relations and cooperation (DIRCO) in a statement on its website on Friday afternoon. “This decisive measure follows a series of unacceptable violations of diplomatic norms and practice which pose a direct challenge to South Africa’s sovereignty,” the statement said. “These violations include the repeated use of official Israeli social media platforms to launch insulting attacks against His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa, and a deliberate failure to inform DIRCO of purported visits by senior Israeli officials.” Within hours, Israel had hit back, expelling Shaun Edward Bynev...

Islamic State claims attack on international airport and airbase in Niger

Image
Islamic State in the Sahel has claimed responsibility for an audacious assault at the international airport and adjacent air force base in Niamey, the capital of Niger, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks jihadist activity and communications worldwide. The attack, which began shortly after midnight on Thursday, reportedly involved motorcycle-riding militants who launched a “surprise and coordinated” strike using heavy weaponry and drones, according to statements released via IS in the Sahel’s propaganda arm. The regional IS affiliate has been linked to high-profile attacks in Niger in recent months, killing more than 120 people in strikes targeting the Tillabéri region in September, and abducting an American pilot in October.

More than 200 killed in Coltan mine collapse in eastern DRC

Image
More than 200 people were killed this week in a collapse at the Rubaya coltan mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Lumumba Kambere Muyisa, a spokesperson for the rebel-appointed governor of the province where the mine is located, told Reuters on Friday. Rubaya produces about 15% of the world’s coltan, which is processed into tantalum – a heat-resistant metal that is in high demand by makers of mobile phones, computers, aerospace components and gas turbines. The site, where local people dig manually for a few dollars a day, has been under the control of the M23 rebel group since 2024. The collapse occurred on Wednesday and the precise toll was still unclear as of Friday evening. “For now, there are more than 200 dead, some of whom are still in the mud and have not yet been recovered,” Muyisa said. He added that several others were injured and taken to three health facilities in the town of Rubaya, while ambulances were expected to transfer the wounded on Saturday to...

Markets Rattle as Trump Taps Kevin Warsh for Fed Chair, Sending Stocks and Gold Sliding.

Image
Wall Street retreated sharply as U.S. financial markets reacted to President Donald Trump’s nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next Federal Reserve Chair, triggering a broad sell-off across equities and commodities. The announcement unsettled investors already navigating inflation concerns and uncertainty around future monetary policy. Major U.S. stock indexes moved lower as traders reassessed expectations for interest rates and central bank independence. Kevin Warsh, a former Federal Reserve governor, is widely viewed as favoring a more hawkish stance on inflation, raising fears of tighter monetary conditions ahead. The impact was also felt in the commodities market, where gold and silver prices dropped sharply, reflecting a shift away from safe-haven assets. A stronger dollar outlook and expectations of higher interest rates weighed heavily on precious metals. Market analysts note that the reaction highlights investor sensitivity to Federal Reserve leadership changes, espec...

Oil Giants Cash In: Chevron and Exxon’s Q4 Earnings Surge Sparks Energy Market Optimism.

Image
Chevron and Exxon Mobil delivered robust fourth-quarter earnings, reinforcing optimism across the global energy sector as U.S. oil prices remained strong heading into the new year. The strong financial performance from two of the world’s largest oil companies highlights the continued profitability of the energy industry despite ongoing market volatility and geopolitical uncertainty. Both companies benefited from elevated crude oil prices, disciplined capital spending, and strong upstream production, allowing them to post earnings that exceeded market expectations. Higher refining margins and steady global demand for oil further supported revenue growth, boosting investor confidence in traditional energy stocks. The strong Q4 results come at a critical time, as markets brace for potential shifts in monetary policy, global demand trends, and energy supply dynamics. Analysts note that Chevron and Exxon’s performance could set the tone for broader energy sector earnings, influe...

Historical Fact Of John Locke

Image
John Locke (1632–1704) was an English philosopher and one of the most influential thinkers of the Enlightenment period. He was born in Wrington, Somerset, England. Locke studied at Oxford University, where he developed strong interests in philosophy, science, and medicine. John Locke is best known for his ideas on empiricism, which holds that knowledge comes from experience and observation rather than being inborn. He rejected the idea of innate ideas and argued that the human mind at birth is a tabula rasa (blank slate). In politics, Locke strongly defended natural rights—life, liberty, and property. He believed that government exists to protect these rights and that people have the right to resist a government that fails to do so. His ideas greatly influenced modern democracy and documents such as the American Declaration of Independence. John Locke died in 1704, but his ideas continue to shape philosophy, education, and political thought today.

Trump Peace Accord vs the United Nations: Has Global Diplomacy Reached a Breaking Point?

Image
The United Nations and the Promise of Collective Peace Since its creation in 1945, the United Nations has stood as the world’s most ambitious experiment in collective peace and security. Born out of the devastation of World War II, its mission was clear: prevent future global conflict through diplomacy, international law, and multilateral cooperation. For decades, the UN helped reduce large-scale wars between major powers, facilitated peacekeeping missions, and provided a forum where even bitter rivals could talk instead of fight. Yet, it has also been criticized for paralysis, veto politics, selective enforcement of resolutions, and an inability to resolve long-running conflicts. It is within this environment of institutional fatigue and global impatience that U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace accord emerged — not as a reform of the UN system, but as a direct challenge to it. Trump’s Peace Accord: A New Model of Diplomacy President Trump’s peace strategy departs sharply from t...

US POLITICS: Democrats Question Intelligence Chief’s Presence at FBI Raid on Georgia Election Facility

Image
Democratic lawmakers are demanding answers after the U.S. Director of National Intelligence was seen during an FBI raid on a Georgia election facility, triggering concerns about the boundaries between intelligence work and domestic law enforcement. The FBI executed a search at a county election operations center in Fulton County as part of an investigation linked to the 2020 presidential election. The unexpected presence of the nation’s top intelligence official immediately drew scrutiny from members of Congress responsible for overseeing intelligence agencies. Lawmakers argue that the intelligence community is legally focused on foreign threats, not domestic election enforcement, warning that such involvement risks undermining civil liberties and public trust. They have requested a detailed explanation of the intelligence chief’s role and whether Congress was properly informed. The administration maintains that election systems are critical infrastructure and that intelligence oversig...

Historical Fact

Image
Herbert Spencer was a 19th-century English philosopher and sociologist best known for applying evolutionary ideas to society. Born in 1820, Spencer believed that society develops gradually, moving from simple forms to more complex ones, just like living organisms. He argued that social institutions such as family, education, and government evolve over time to meet human needs. Spencer introduced the idea of “survival of the fittest,” a phrase he used to explain how individuals and societies adapt to their environment. He believed that social progress occurs naturally when people are free to compete and improve themselves without too much government interference. Because of this view, he supported individualism and limited state control. Although some of his ideas are controversial today, especially when misused to justify inequality, Herbert Spencer made a lasting impact on sociology and social theory. His works helped shape early sociological thinking and encouraged schola...

"Doing Another Test Won't Change The Result,Do It 100 Times,The DNA Profile Remains The Same—Adeleke

Image
Businessman and philanthropist Adedeji Adeleke has firmly dismissed calls for repeated DNA testing, insisting that science leaves no room for ambiguity once results are clear. Speaking during an interview on Channels TV, Adeleke explained that multiple tests had already been conducted, with consistent outcomes that conclusively ruled out paternity beyond reasonable doubt. According to him, three tests were initiated, though only two were valid after one was reportedly compromised. Both confirmed the same DNA profile when samples were analysed in the same laboratory and compared with existing records. Adeleke stressed that the procedure involved saliva swabs, not blood samples, contrary to claims circulating on social media. Addressing public pressure for yet another test, he was unequivocal: “Doing another test will not change David’s DNA profile. It will still be the same. It’s like a fingerprint.” He explained that DNA, once established, remains unchanged regardless of ho...
