Acting Director, Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, CRPSGBV, Prof. Igot Ofem, at a media briefing to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, themed “Rights, Justice, Actions for All Women and Girls,” at the Lagos State University, Ojo, yesterday, said the national campus survey, organised by the Committee of Gender Studies Directors in Nigerian Universities in partnership with Alliance for Africa, AfA, was conducted across 12 participating universities in the country. 6bn people online, 2.2bn stills offline, says ITU

Image
By Juliet Umeh The world’s online population rose by more than 240 million people in 2025, bringing the total number of Internet users to six billion, according to the latest Facts and Figures 2025 report released by the International Telecommunication Union, ITU. The report shows that about three-quarters of the global population are now online, up from 5.8 billion in 2024. However, 2.2 billion people remain offline, underscoring persistent digital divides despite steady progress. ITU Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, said: “In a world where digital technologies are essential to so much of daily life, everyone should have the opportunity to benefit from being online. Today’s digital divides are increasingly defined by speed, reliability, affordability, and skills.” For the first time, the report estimates that 5G subscriptions account for about one-third of global mobile broadband subscriptions, reaching around three billion users. While 5G now covers 55 per cent of...

Life after Trump: Republicans eye vance, Rubio for Leadership

Image
For a decade, President Donald Trump has been the gravitational force of the American right, but at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference a pressing question is animating conversations in the hallways: who comes next? At what is billed as the world’s largest conservative meeting, there is no clear consensus — but an early contest is taking shape. For the first time in years, the 79-year-old second-term president is skipping the conference — typically held in Washington, but this year staged in the Dallas suburbs — allowing other Republican stars to step out of his shadow. Across conversations with attendees, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio stood out as the main contenders to lead a post-Trump Republican Party, with support split in a race that remains wide open. Polling suggests Vance holds a comfortable national lead among Republican voters. But on the ground in Texas, the divide appeared more even — with roughly half backing Vance...

Image
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the federal government to commence implementation of the newly approved salary structure for university lecturers. ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, gave the directive on Thursday while addressing members at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, Bauchi State. He said the countdown begins immediately, warning that the union would take decisive action if the government fails to comply. “We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the federal government to commence payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” Channels TV quoted Piwuna as saying. Piwuna decried what he described as the federal government’s persistent failure to honour agreements with the union, noting that such lapses have repeatedly triggered industrial disputes and strikes. On the proposed establishment of a branch of Coventry University in Nigeria fo...

Iran says hotels housing US soldiers in region will be targeted

Image
Iran’s military has warned that hotels housing US soldiers across the region would be targets in its war with the United States and Israel. “When all the Americans (forces) go into a hotel, then from our perspective that hotel becomes American,” armed forces spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi told state television on Thursday. “Should we just stand by and let the Americans strike us? When we respond, naturally we have to strike wherever they are.” On February 28, Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran, killing its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggering a war that spread across the Middle East. The war has since spread across the Middle East, with Iran responding with drone and missile attacks on Israel and US interests in the region. On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had accused US soldiers of using people in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries as “human shields”. “From the outset of this war, US soldiers fled military bases in ...

Driver escapes death as fire guts truck along otedola Bridge in Lagos

Image
By Olasunkanmi Akoni A yet-to-be-identified driver narrowly escaped death late Saturday evening when a Mack truck transporting an empty 20-foot container was gutted by fire at the Alausa Secretariat, inward Otedola Bridge axis along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident comes shortly after a similar tragedy at the Lekki-Epe corridor, where two persons—a driver and his assistant—lost their lives in an explosion involving a trailer and a gas truck. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), swiftly arrived at the scene and brought the blaze under control. Eyewitnesses said the truck suddenly caught fire while in motion before the driver brought it to a halt. Fortunately, the driver escaped with minor injuries. The coordinated efforts of LASTMA and the fire service ensured the immediate suppression of the inferno, preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster. Their prompt ...

The Red Flag Generation: How we learned to leave before we learned to stay, by Stephanie Shaakaa

Image
We live in an age of warning signs. We live in a time where falling in love feels less like discovering a person and more like passing a test. From New York to Nairobi, Tokyo to Lagos, people are studying messages, timing replies, measuring tone, weighing pauses, turning ordinary human behavior into evidence. And somewhere in all of this, something deeper has shifted. Perhaps the real red flag is not in the other person, but in how quickly we have learned to walk away. Not long ago, relationships began with curiosity. People did not arrive with invisible scorecards. They listened. They watched. They allowed another person to unfold slowly, sometimes awkwardly, sometimes beautifully. Understanding was not immediate. It was built through time, through shared moments, through misunderstandings that did not end everything but instead became part of the story. It was rarely perfect. But...

The Strait closed without a shot, by Stephanie Shaakaa

Image
For generations, the world assumed that if the Strait of Hormuz ever closed, it would be because someone fired the first shot. What the world is discovering instead is far more unsettling. Sometimes the strait closes when someone recalculates the risk. There are moments in history when power appears loud and visible, only for its true center to reveal itself elsewhere, quiet and decisive. Hormuz has always been imagined in dramatic terms. Warships cutting across narrow waters. Missiles tracing fire through the sky. Maps crowded with arrows and formations. It is the narrow passage through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil must move, the place where every geopolitical crisis seems destined to arrive. So whenever tensions rise between Iran and the West, the same question returns. Will Iran close the strait? For decades, the answer was expected to come in the language of force. Mines laid in shipping lanes. Tankers seized. A show of strength that would bring traffic to a ...

Petrol Imports Rise Despite Local Refinery Push

Image
Nigeria’s petrol imports have surged again, with the country spending over ₦84 billion on fuel imports from Togo in recent weeks. The development raises concerns about the country’s continued dependence on foreign refined petroleum despite ongoing efforts to boost local refining capacity. Industry analysts say delays in fully operationalizing domestic refineries, including private and state-owned facilities, have kept Nigeria reliant on imports. This has also contributed to pressure on foreign exchange reserves and the naira. Government officials maintain that the situation is temporary, noting that increased refining capacity is expected to reduce imports significantly in the coming months.

Extremist Groups Regain Strength

Image
Extremist Groups Regain Strength Security experts warn that extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP are demonstrating renewed strength despite years of military operations against them. Recent attacks, including the Maiduguri bombings, highlight their ability to coordinate and strike high-profile targets.  Analysts suggest that the groups may be improving cooperation, increasing the risk of more sophisticated and frequent attacks. While Nigerian forces maintain control of major towns, militants continue to operate in rural areas, launching raids and ambushes.  International support, including surveillance and military assistance from allies such as the United States, has helped counter insurgency efforts. However, experts caution that military action alone may not be enough to eliminate the threat without addressing underlying socio-economic issues

Tinubu Embarks on UK Visit Amid Security Concerns

Image
President Bola Tinubu has traveled to the United Kingdom for a strategic visit aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic relations. The visit includes high-level meetings focused on investment, trade partnerships, and bilateral cooperation.  However, the trip comes amid rising security concerns at home, particularly following the deadly Maiduguri bombings. Some political figures and opposition groups have urged the president to return to Nigeria to address the escalating crisis directly.  The presidency has maintained that security agencies are fully engaged and capable of managing the situation, while reaffirming its commitment to combating terrorism nationwide

Rising Security Crisis Across Nigeria

Image
Nigeria is facing a worsening security crisis as violence spreads across multiple regions, including the northeast, northwest, and central areas. Armed bandits, insurgents, and communal clashes have contributed to thousands of deaths in recent years.  In the northwest, at least 15 people were killed in fresh attacks on villages in Katsina State, reportedly carried out by gunmen in retaliation for earlier security operations. The violence reflects ongoing tensions linked to resource conflicts and weak law enforcement in rural areas.  The Nigerian military remains overstretched, struggling to contain multiple threats simultaneously. While the government has promised increased recruitment and modernization of security forces, critics argue that a long-term strategy is still lacking

Nigeria’s Oil Sector Shows Signs of Recovery

Image
Nigeria’s oil industry is showing signs of recovery following years of decline, as recent reforms by the federal government begin to yield results. Key policy changes, including the restructuring of major oil assets and improved regulatory frameworks, have boosted investor confidence.  Oil production has increased to about 1.5 million barrels per day, supported by over $5 billion in new investments in upstream operations. Local energy companies are increasingly taking over onshore assets previously managed by international oil firms, signaling a shift toward domestic control.  Despite the progress, challenges such as oil theft, corruption, and environmental concerns continue to affect the sector. Experts caution that sustained reforms and transparency will be critical to maintaining long-term growth and stability.

Deadly Bombings Hit Maiduguri

Image
At least 23 people have been killed and over 100 injured following a series of coordinated suicide bombings in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The attacks occurred during the evening as residents were breaking their Ramadan fast, targeting crowded locations including a market, a post office, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.  Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with emergency responders rushing victims to nearby hospitals while security forces cordoned off affected areas. Authorities suspect the involvement of extremist groups such as Boko Haram or ISWAP, though no group has officially claimed responsibility.  President Bola Tinubu condemned the attacks and ordered security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to oversee operations. Analysts warn that the incident signals a troubling resurgence of insurgent activity in northeastern Nigeria after a period of relative calm.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 39 people were involved in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Kugbo Furniture Market axis of the AYA–Nyanya route in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Acting Corps Public Education Officer (ACPEO), Mrs Felicia Kalu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, in Abuja. Kalu said that the crash occurred at about 4:48pm on Monday and involved six vehicles, including two tippers, a commercial bus and private cars. According to her, the FRSC rescue team from Zebra 12 Unit arrived at the scene within four minutes of receiving the distress call and immediately commenced life-saving operations. “In a coordinated rescue effort, officers successfully extricated a trapped victim from one of the heavily damaged tippers and administered first aid before evacuating him to the National Hospital for further medical attention,” she said. Kalu added that out of the 39 persons involved, two male victims sustained injuries ranging from...

China says to provide humanitarian assistance to Iran, Mideast nations

Image
China said on Tuesday it will provide humanitarian assistance to Middle Eastern countries, including Iran and Lebanon, targeted in US and Israeli strikes in the conflict now in its third week. Beijing is a close partner of Iran and has urged the United States and Israel to cease their attacks on the country, while also criticising Tehran’s strikes against Gulf states housing US military bases. China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the war had caused “grave humanitarian catastrophes” in Iran and other Middle Eastern nations. “China has decided to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. It is hoped this will help alleviate the humanitarian plight faced by the local populations,” Lin told a press conference, without providing further details. “China will continue to make every effort to promote peace and stop the war… and to prevent further spreading of the humanitarian crisis,” he added. China has sought to mediate in the war, w...
