Nollywood Actors Demand Fair Pay

Image
Several prominent Nollywood actors staged a peaceful protest in Lagos this week, demanding fair pay and proper royalty rights from both production houses and international streaming platforms. According to the actors, while Nigerian films are now widely consumed on streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showmax, actors often receive little or no additional compensation from these platforms. Industry insiders say the protest marks a turning point, as performers increasingly demand structured contracts that guarantee both upfront pay and a share of revenue from international streaming. In response, some production companies have promised to engage in dialogue to develop a standardized pay framework. Pop star Katy Perry loses trademark fight against Australian Katie Perry

Image
Australian designer Katie Perry has won the right to sell clothes under her name, claiming victory Wednesday in a years-long trademark spat with US pop megastar Katy Perry. Designer Katie Perry accused her far more famous namesake of trademark infringement, arguing she had claimed the “Katie Perry” brand before the singer became a global sensation. But songstress Katy Perry said her music had already gone “viral” as the designer started selling clothes around 2008, and sought to have the Australian trademark scrubbed out. An Australian court agreed with the singer, ruling in 2024 the clothing trademark should be cancelled. But Australia’s High Court has now ruled in favour of the local designer on appeal, finding there was unlikely to be any risk of “confusion” between the two. A representative for the singer told AFP that despite the legal action she “has never sought to close down” the Australian business.
