Commonwealth Games: Nigeria’s boxing trials final hold today

The final bouts of Nigeria’s national boxing trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place today at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The competition will determine the 10 boxers who will represent Team Nigeria at the upcoming Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

A total of 128 boxers, made up of 101 men and 27 women, began the tournament earlier in the week, competing across several weight categories. After days of preliminary fights, quarter-finals and semi-finals, the finalists will now face off in the championship bouts to secure a place in the national team.

According to the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Vivian Azimene, the fighters who emerge victorious in the finals will proceed to national camp to begin preparations for the Games. Other standout athletes from the trials may also be retained as sparring partners to help strengthen the squad ahead of the competition.

Nigeria is expected to field 10 boxers—five men and five women—across different weight divisions at the Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 24 to August 1, 2026, in Glasgow. The trials are aimed at selecting the strongest possible team to improve on Nigeria’s performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country won one silver and three bronze medals in boxing.
