Middle East Situation Declared a ‘Major Humanitarian Emergency
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has declared the ongoing crisis in the Middle East a “major humanitarian emergency” as violence intensifies across the region. The agency warns that recent hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have triggered mass displacement and forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.
According to UNHCR officials, nearly 100,000 people have been displaced within Lebanon, with many more seeking shelter in neighbouring areas. Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon have also reportedly returned across borders amid the escalating conflict. The displacement figures are believed to be an undercount, and humanitarian agencies express deep concern over the lack of adequate water, sanitation, food, and medical services for those uprooted by fighting.
UN agencies are calling on all parties to the conflict to ensure safe passage for civilians and expanded humanitarian access, as the situation continues to deteriorate. Efforts to deliver life‑saving assistance are underway, but agencies stress that needs could rapidly outpace resources if the crisis worsens
