Obasanjo Reflects on Imprisonment Under Abacha
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has spoken publicly about his imprisonment during the military regime of Sani Abacha, describing it as the price he paid for standing by his principles.
Obasanjo recalled that he was detained in the 1990s after being accused of plotting against the government — allegations widely regarded by observers as politically motivated. He was later released following Abacha’s death in 1998.
In his recent remarks, the former leader said the experience strengthened his belief in democracy and the rule of law. He noted that sacrifices are sometimes necessary in the struggle for justice and national progress.
Political historians view his comments as part of ongoing reflections on Nigeria’s democratic journey. His experience remains a reference point in discussions about civil liberties and the nation’s transition from military to civilian rule
