UNILAG Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Salary Dispute

Lecturers at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have begun an indefinite strike following a dispute with the university management over what they described as incomplete salary payments. The strike was declared by the university’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) after an emergency meeting held at the institution’s Akoka campus in Lagos.

According to the union, the decision was taken after lecturers received what they called “amputated salaries” for January and February 2026. The lecturers claimed that several allowances were not included in the payments. Staff at the Akoka campus reportedly did not receive their Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), while lecturers at the Idi-Araba campus said both the Earned Academic Allowance and Clinical Academic Teaching Allowance (CATA) were missing from their salaries.

ASUU-UNILAG leaders said the strike officially started Wednesday, March 11, 2026, and lecturers have been directed to withdraw all teaching and academic services until the university pays the full outstanding salaries. The union stated that the salary deductions were unfair and unacceptable, insisting that the strike would continue until management resolves the issue and restores the lecturers’ full pay.

The strike has raised concerns among students and parents as academic activities at the university may be disrupted. Reports indicate that the university management has scheduled meetings with union leaders in an attempt to resolve the dispute quickly and prevent a prolonged shutdown of lectures and examinations.
