Colombia Tensions Rise as Petro Warns U.S. Military Action Could Spark Wider Unrest

Colombian President Gustavo Petro sharply criticized a U.S. military operation on Monday, warning that any direct U.S. military action in Colombia could trigger armed resistance in rural areas and widespread instability.

Petro said that detaining Colombia’s president would not calm tensions but instead provoke broad unrest from “the people,” underscoring deep concerns about foreign intervention and national sovereignty.

The remarks came as former U.S. President Donald Trump renewed accusations against Petro, alleging involvement in drug trafficking and claiming Colombia was being led by a president facilitating cocaine into the United States. Trump’s comments echo earlier U.S. actions against Venezuela, where he accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of narco-trafficking and authorized military operations that culminated in Maduro’s capture and transport to the United States on federal drug charges.

Colombia’s foreign ministry responded firmly, rejecting threats or the use of force, and calling instead for solutions rooted in dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect between sovereign states.

The exchange highlights growing tensions in U.S.–Latin America relations, especially as American leaders continue to frame anti-drug and security policies in ways that regional governments view as heavy-handed or intrusive.
