IRAN PROTEST: “You Cannot Expect Silence From a People Crushed by Inflation and Fear” — Khakpour Tells Khamenei

Former Iran national football team captain Mohammad Khakpour has publicly criticized Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s description of Iranian protesters as “rioters,” saying economic suffering — not chaos — is driving people into the streets.

In an Instagram post that quickly gained attention, Khakpour said:

“You cannot expect silence from a people being crushed under inflation, unemployment, and fear of tomorrow, then dismiss their voice with a single label.”

He stressed that Iranians protesting are not seeking disorder, but reacting to years of economic pressure, injustice, and public humiliation.

“Protest is no longer a political choice. It is a human reaction to pain,” Khakpour wrote, warning that repression only deepens national wounds rather than resolving them.

Khakpour, a respected sports figure and former U-23 national team coach, also condemned the use of force against demonstrators, arguing that silencing citizens through fear, batons, or bullets does not erase grievances.

“Unheard protest doesn’t disappear. It becomes deeper pain,” he added.

His remarks come amid ongoing protests across Iran fueled by rising inflation, unemployment, and declining living standards. While Iranian authorities have framed the unrest as foreign-influenced riots, critics argue the demonstrations reflect genuine economic and social distress.

Khakpour’s intervention adds to a growing list of prominent Iranian figures speaking out, signaling widening frustration beyond political activists and into mainstream society.
