Lagos Taskforce arrests 26 miscreants for aiding illegal waste disposal, extortion racket

In separate enforcement operations on Tuesday, the Lagos State Environmental Task Force arrested 26 suspects for extorting money from cart pushers illegally disposing of waste at the Orile Under Bridge, and cleared unlawful settlements along the Coastal Road.

According to the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the suspects were facilitating indiscriminate waste dumping in exchange for cash.

In his post on X, Wahab noted that, acting on credible intelligence that hoodlums had hijacked the Orile Under Bridge area, the taskforce operatives launched a raid at approximately 2:45 p.m. to dislodge miscreants extorting money from illegal cart pushers.

He wrote, “Following credible reports that hoodlums had taken over the Orile Under Bridge and were extorting money from cart pushers who dump refuse illegally in the area, the Environmental Task Force carried out a raid at about 2:45 pm today.

“During the operation, 26 suspects were arrested. Some of them admitted to collecting money from cart pushers in exchange for allowing indiscriminate dumping of waste.

“They have been taken into custody for further investigation and necessary action in line with the law.”

The Commissioner added that earlier that morning, at about 8:00 a.m., the agency operatives intensified the ongoing urban regeneration exercise along the Coastal Road.

“Hoodlums had converted the road setback into makeshift dwellings, erecting several wooden sheds and occupying the corridor unlawfully,” he wrote.

“The illegal structures were dismantled, and items stored along the roadside were removed.”

“We will not allow public infrastructure to be hijacked for illegal activities. Enforcement will remain consistent and sustained across the State,” Wahab added.

It was reported on Monday that the Lagos Waste Management Authority said it has seized several waste carts and arrested an individual during an early morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island, following targeted surveillance of unauthorised waste disposal within the area.

Earlier in January, LAWMA was also reported to have arrested several cart pushers for illegally dumping waste along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, Ojo, as part of efforts to curb environmental degradation in the area.
