Nigeria’s Governors Bet on Sugar: New Push to Drive Industrial Growth, Jobs, and Import Reduction.

Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum has unveiled a renewed strategy to prioritise local sugar production as a key driver of industrial growth, job creation, and reduced dependence on imports. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s agro-industrial value chain by encouraging large-scale sugar cultivation and processing within Nigeria.
Sugar is a critical input for industries such as food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. By boosting domestic production, state governments hope to lower production costs for manufacturers, stabilize supply, and conserve foreign exchange currently spent on sugar imports.
The plan is also expected to create thousands of jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and distribution. As Nigeria pushes for economic diversification, the focus on sugar highlights a broader shift toward agriculture-led industrialization and sustainable economic growth.
