Anambra begins demolition of illegal structures at Onitsha main market.

The Onitsha North Local Government Council has started demolishing illegal structures at the Onitsha Main Market to restore the original masterplan and improve trading activities. The council had given occupants a 14-day notice, which was extended by another 14 days, expiring on February 28, 2026.

Some traders had resisted the demolition plan, filing a suit at the High Court of Anambra State, which granted an interim injunction restraining authorities from taking further action until March 16, 2026. Despite this, authorities began the demolition on March 1, 2026.

The demolition affects structures at Park 1, Park 2, and Park 3 of the market. Traders have been advised to evacuate their belongings before the enforcement date. This move aims to address congestion and safety concerns in the market, one of Nigeria's largest commercial hubs.
