At Least 65 Nigerian Soldiers Killed in Jihadist Raids in North-East
At least 65 Nigerian soldiers have reportedly been killed following coordinated attacks by jihadist militants in the country’s north-east region. The raids targeted several military bases in Borno State, an area that has long been the epicentre of insurgency by groups linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Security sources say the militants launched surprise attacks on multiple army positions using heavy weapons and vehicles. During the raids, the insurgents reportedly overran some bases and seized weapons, ammunition, and military equipment before retreating into remote areas.
The attacks highlight the continuing security challenges facing Nigeria despite years of military operations against insurgent groups. Analysts say the latest raids show that militant groups in the region still possess the capability to carry out large-scale attacks against security forces. The Nigerian military has since launched operations to track down the attackers and prevent further assaults on communities and military installations.
