Ali Khamenei, fully known as Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, was a prominent Iranian cleric and political leader who has served as Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989, making him one of the longest-ruling leaders in the Middle East.
Early Life and Education
Ali Khamenei was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, Iran, into a religious family. His father was an Islamic scholar who lived modestly and emphasized religious learning and discipline. Khamenei studied the Qur’an and Islamic sciences from a young age and later continued his education in the Shiʿa seminaries of Mashhad, Qom, and Najaf. During this period, he was influenced by revolutionary Islamic thought and developed a strong opposition to Iran’s monarchy.
Role in the Islamic Revolution
Before 1979, Khamenei was actively involved in movements opposing Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Because of his activism, he was arrested and imprisoned several times. After the success of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he emerged as a key figure in the new Islamic Republic, serving on important revolutionary bodies and gaining national prominence.
Presidency (1981–1989)
In 1981, Khamenei was elected President of Iran, shortly after the assassination of President Mohammad-Ali Rajai. His presidency coincided with the Iran–Iraq War, a period marked by intense military conflict and economic hardship. During this time, an assassination attempt left him with a permanently injured right arm. He was re-elected for a second term and remained president until 1989.
Supreme Leader of Iran (1989–Present)
Following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Khamenei was chosen by the Assembly of Experts as Supreme Leader, the highest authority in Iran’s political and religious system. A constitutional amendment made it possible for him to assume the role despite not being a senior clerical authority at the time.
As Supreme Leader, he holds ultimate control over:
The armed forces
The judiciary
State media
Key political and security institutions
His authority surpasses that of Iran’s elected president and parliament.
