Iran to choose new leader soon. Here are Ayatollah Khamenei’s likely successors.
Iran's Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body of senior clerics elected by the people, will choose the new supreme leader. The assembly must convene within 10 days of the vacancy to elect a successor. A temporary leadership council, comprising President Masoud Pezeshkian, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei (head of the judiciary), and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi (a jurist of Iran's Guardian Council), is currently overseeing the transition.
Some potential candidates for the role include:
• Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei : Current head of the judiciary and member of the temporary leadership council
• Alireza Arafi: A senior cleric, member of the Guardian Council, and head of the Basij
• Hassan Khomeini: Grandson of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, considered a moderate
• Mojtaba Khamenei : Son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, seen as a potential hardline successor
• Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri: An ultra-hardline cleric and member of the Assembly of Experts.
The process involves vetting candidates through the Guardian Council, followed by private deliberations and a simple majority vote within the Assembly of Experts. The new leader is expected to be chosen within days, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi suggesting "one or two days".
