MSC Secures 45-Year Lagos Port Concession with Nigerdock
Global shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has secured a 45-year concession agreement with Nigerdock to develop and operate a major container terminal at Snake Island Port in Lagos. The agreement marks one of the most significant private investments in Nigeria’s maritime sector in recent years and is expected to transform cargo handling capacity in the country.
Under the deal, MSC will build and operate a modern deep-sea container terminal capable of handling large international cargo vessels. The project will include a 910-metre quay and modern cargo-handling equipment, allowing the port to receive bigger ships that currently struggle to berth at some Nigerian ports. Industry experts say the development could reduce congestion at major ports in Lagos and improve efficiency in Nigeria’s shipping and logistics sector.
Officials say the project will also create thousands of jobs and attract new investments into Nigeria’s maritime industry. The new terminal is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a key shipping hub in West Africa, while also boosting trade and supporting economic growth by improving the movement of goods through the country’s ports.
