Netanyahu's war alliance with Trump faces test as Iran crisis widens.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has achieved his long-held goal of significantly weakening Iran’s leadership through the ongoing military campaign, but his close partnership with U.S. President Donald Trump is now facing a critical test as the conflict shows signs of dragging on and its priorities shift. At the start of the air campaign late last week, both leaders had pointed to overthrowing Iran’s government as a key objective.

However, in remarks at the White House on Monday, Trump made no explicit mention of regime change as the principal aim, focusing instead on broader security threats and military objectives.
The war, now entering its fifth day, has seen major shifts in strategic focus. Following a joint series of strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials, the U.S. Navy’s USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier redeployed from the Caribbean toward the Mediterranean, underscoring America’s deepening military involvement. Netanyahu, speaking in the U.S., reiterated that Trump’s support was crucial to action against Tehran, while Trump defended Washington’s role, saying the U.S. acted based on its own assessments of imminent threats, not because Israel pressured it into war.

For Netanyahu personally, the conflict comes at a politically sensitive time. The 76-year-old leader faces elections later this year amid lingering public discontent over past security failures and a fractious governing coalition at home. Analysts say a swift and decisive outcome from the Iran campaign could bolster his image as a defender of Israel, but lingering casualties and economic costs may undercut his support. Despite framing the campaign as a continuation of efforts to weaken Iran’s allied militant groups and secure Israel’s future, some political observers believe that even success in this conflict may not fully restore confidence among voters still affected by years of regional instability.
