Nigeria Imports Petrol Worth ₦84.69 Billion From Togo

Nigeria imported ₦84.69 billion worth of petrol from the West African country of Togo in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the latest foreign trade statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The data highlights Nigeria’s continued dependence on imported refined fuel despite being one of Africa’s largest crude-oil producers.

According to the report, the importation took place between October and December 2025, when Nigeria sourced large volumes of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from neighbouring countries to meet domestic demand. Analysts say such imports occur when local refining capacity is insufficient or when supply from domestic refineries cannot fully satisfy national consumption.

Energy experts note that Nigeria still relies heavily on imported petrol even after the launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and other modular refineries. In 2025, imports still accounted for more than 60 percent of the country’s petrol supply, showing that domestic production has not yet completely replaced foreign supply.

The continued importation of petrol has raised concerns among economists and policy experts. They warn that heavy dependence on foreign fuel drains Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves and exposes the country to global price fluctuations. When international oil prices rise—especially during geopolitical crises like the U.S.–Israel–Iran conflict—fuel prices in Nigeria also increase.

Experts argue that increasing domestic refining capacity and ensuring stable operations at local refineries will help Nigeria reduce fuel imports, stabilize pump prices, and strengthen energy security in the long term.
