Nigeria: Senate Passes New Digital ID Law
The Nigerian Senate has passed a new Digital Identity Bill aimed at strengthening the country’s national identification system and improving access to public services.
The legislation seeks to expand the digital identity database managed by the National Identity Management Commission, making it easier for citizens and legal residents to obtain secure identification. Lawmakers say the new framework will help government agencies verify identities more efficiently and reduce fraud across sectors.
Under the proposed system, individuals will be required to enroll in a unified digital identification platform linked to the National Identification Number (NIN). The digital ID will allow citizens to access banking services, government welfare programs, and voting registration through a single secure identity record. Supporters of the law argue that it will improve transparency and reduce cases of identity duplication.
However, some civil society organizations have expressed concerns about privacy and the safety of personal data. They are calling for stronger safeguards to ensure that citizens’ biometric information and personal records are not misused.
Government officials have responded by assuring the public that strict cybersecurity measures and data protection rules will guide the implementation of the new system.
