D’Tigers Drop to 53rd in World Rankings

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have slipped to 53rd position in the latest FIBA world rankings, marking a significant decline for the former African champions. The ranking, released by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), shows the Nigerian team dropping 11 places from 42nd position earlier in the year, following recent international competitions.

The decline is largely linked to the team’s performance at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament in Angola, where D’Tigers reached the quarter-finals but were eliminated by Senegal after a 91–75 defeat. Despite topping their group with victories over Madagascar, Tunisia and Cameroon during the group stage, the early knockout stage exit significantly affected Nigeria’s points in the global rankings.

As a result of the drop, Nigeria also slipped in the African continental ranking, moving from sixth to eighth place. Countries such as South Sudan, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt and Senegal now rank above the West African nation on the continent.

Basketball officials remain optimistic that the team can bounce back in upcoming competitions, particularly the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers, where D’Tigers are expected to compete against other African sides as they attempt to improve their global standing.
