NLC Demands Urgent Relief Over Rise in Petrol Price

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and protect Nigerians from the sharp rise in petrol prices caused by the ongoing U.S.–Israel–Iran war and the resulting surge in global oil prices. The labour union warned that Nigerian workers are facing severe hardship as fuel prices continue to climb across the country.

According to the NLC, petrol prices in Nigeria have risen dramatically, with pump prices reported between ₦1,170 and ₦1,300 per litre in several states. The union said the increase is linked to volatility in the global oil market triggered by the Middle East conflict, which has disrupted oil supply and pushed crude prices above $100 per barrel.

The NLC described the situation as a “direct assault on Nigerians”, arguing that ordinary workers are paying the price for a global geopolitical crisis they did not create. The labour body said rising fuel costs have increased transportation fares, food prices, and overall living expenses, making it difficult for many Nigerians to meet basic needs.
