Police Chief: Nigeria Police Must Be Neutral in 2027 Elections.
Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will remain neutral during the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a security briefing in Abuja, he emphasized that the police have a constitutional responsibility to protect democratic processes without favouring any political party or candidate.
Egbetokun warned that any officer found engaging in partisan conduct, voter intimidation, or electoral malpractice would face disciplinary action, including possible prosecution. He stressed that professionalism, fairness, and respect for human rights must guide all operations before, during, and after the elections.
The police leadership also announced plans to intensify training for officers on election security management. This includes crowd control strategies, collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and improved intelligence gathering to prevent violence at polling units.
Political observers say the public reassurance is important as preparations for 2027 gradually begin. Civil society groups have repeatedly called for security agencies to remain impartial in order to strengthen voter confidence and safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
