Tinubu Pledges Timely Release of Sports Funding

President Tinubu has approved a comprehensive reset of Nigeria's sports funding framework, ensuring timely release of funds for sporting activities and infrastructure from 2026.

This move is aimed at addressing delays in funding and weak infrastructure investment that have hindered sports development. The President directed relevant ministries to make adequate provisions in the national budget for sports development.

The NSC chairman, Shehu Dikko, welcomed the move, stating that it would enable Nigerian athletes to prepare thoroughly and compete proudly on the global stage. The funding reset is expected to improve athlete welfare, grassroots development, and international performance. It is also anticipated to attract private-sector investment and promote sports tourism.

The sports sector reform is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria's sports industry, with potential benefits including job creation, increased investment, and enhanced global influence. The government has urged stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of the reform initiative.
