Trump says he must be involved in choosing Iran’s next leader

WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump has said he believes the United States must play a role in choosing Iran’s next leader following the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which has created a power vacuum in Tehran. Trump made the remark during an interview with a U.S. news outlet, insisting that Washington should be involved in shaping Iran’s future leadership after the ongoing conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

Trump dismissed speculation that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Iranian leader, could take over the position. He described Mojtaba as “a lightweight” and said he would not accept a successor who continues the policies of his father. According to the U.S. president, the next leader of Iran must be someone who can bring “harmony and peace” and prevent further conflict between Tehran and Washington.

The remarks come amid rising tensions in the Middle East after the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei during airstrikes linked to the ongoing war involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Iranian authorities have yet to officially announce a new Supreme Leader, while political analysts warn that any attempt by foreign powers to influence Iran’s leadership could deepen the crisis and spark further instability in the region
