Nollywood Actors Demand Fair Pay

Several prominent Nollywood actors staged a peaceful protest in Lagos this week, demanding fair pay and proper royalty rights from both production houses and international streaming platforms. According to the actors, while Nigerian films are now widely consumed on streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Showmax, actors often receive little or no additional compensation from these platforms.

The protest, organized by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), saw actors carrying placards highlighting issues such as unpaid royalties, lack of residual payments, and delayed salaries. Industry insiders say the protest marks a turning point, as performers increasingly demand structured contracts that guarantee both upfront pay and a share of revenue from international streaming.

In response, some production companies have promised to engage in dialogue to develop a standardized pay framework. Legal experts suggest that formal contracts and royalty agreements could not only protect actors but also attract more investors into Nollywood by ensuring transparency and accountability.
