Deadly Bombings Hit Maiduguri
At least 23 people have been killed and over 100 injured following a series of coordinated suicide bombings in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. The attacks occurred during the evening as residents were breaking their Ramadan fast, targeting crowded locations including a market, a post office, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with emergency responders rushing victims to nearby hospitals while security forces cordoned off affected areas. Authorities suspect the involvement of extremist groups such as Boko Haram or ISWAP, though no group has officially claimed responsibility.
President Bola Tinubu condemned the attacks and ordered security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to oversee operations. Analysts warn that the incident signals a troubling resurgence of insurgent activity in northeastern Nigeria after a period of relative calm.
