SERAP Sues Nigerian Government Over Phone-Tapping Rules
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian government at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice over alleged unlawful phone-tapping regulations. The organisation argues that the government’s interception regulations allow mass surveillance that could violate citizens’ privacy rights
SERAP insists that the rules, known as the Lawful Interception of Communications Regulations, 2019, permit security agencies to monitor communications without adequate legal safeguards. According to the group, such powers could be abused and may undermine democratic freedoms and media independence in the country.
