Super Eagles Face Russia With 19 Players After Seven Withdrawals

Nigeria's Super Eagles will face Russia in an international friendly on Tuesday, October 6, with the Nigerian squad reduced to 19 available players following the withdrawal of seven players.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said injuries, club restrictions and a documentation problem were responsible for the withdrawals, leaving coach Éric Chelle with a significantly reshaped squad.

Seven Players Withdraw From Russia Friendly

Captain Wilfred Ndidi is among the players who will miss the match after suffering an injury.

The other unavailable players are Raphael Onyedika, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Ridwan Abdulrasaq Popoola, Victory Akpe, Moses Usor and Suleiman Mubarak.

According to the NFF, Ndidi and Victory Akpe were ruled out because of injuries.

Several other players were prevented from travelling by their clubs, while Suleiman Mubarak was unable to travel because he could not secure the required residence permit.

Nigeria Calls Up Another Player

The withdrawals initially left Nigeria with 18 players in Russia.

However, Ibrahim Ajasa of Russian club FC Rostov subsequently joined the squad, taking the number of available players to 19.

The reduced squad has forced coach Éric Chelle to work with fewer options ahead of the friendly.

Super Eagles Looking to Respond

Nigeria enters the match looking to recover from a disappointing result in its most recent competitive fixture.

The Super Eagles suffered a 3–0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Russia friendly therefore gives the team an opportunity to test other players and rebuild confidence.

The match is also an opportunity for players who may not normally start for the national team to demonstrate what they can offer.

New Opportunities for Players

The absence of several established players could provide opportunities for younger or less experienced members of the squad.

Players such as Michael Atata and Aderemi Adeoye of Ikorodu City have been among the newer faces around the Super Eagles setup, while other players will be hoping to make an impression against Russia.

Nigeria's final squad includes players from clubs in Nigeria and across Europe, giving Chelle a mixture of domestic and international experience.

Nigeria vs Russia

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday.

Nigeria will be hoping for a stronger performance after the heavy defeat to Guinea-Bissau, while Russia will also be looking to use the international friendly to assess its squad.

The two teams previously met in June 2025, when they played out a 1–1 draw in Moscow.

With seven Nigerian players unavailable, the match could provide an important test for the remaining members of the Super Eagles squad.

For coach Éric Chelle, it is another opportunity to evaluate his players and prepare the team for future competitive assignments.
