  ABUJA, Nigeria  — Gunmen attacked a community in northwestern Nigeria, killing at least 30 people and injuring several others, residents said Monday, in the latest violence in the conflict-hit region. The attack occurred late Sunday night in the Naridon village in Kaduna state’s Kaura council area, said Derek Christopher, chairman of the civil society group Southern Kaduna Peace and Security Network. “The same community was attacked last year around this time,” Christopher said in a statement, suggesting that the government has abandoned any intention of protecting the area from attacks by armed groups. “I don’t know who these people have left to fight for them,” he said.   Nigerians spent about ₦1.7 trillion on data services provided by MTN Nigeria in the first half of 2026, underscoring the continued demand for internet services despite the country’s economic challenges. MTN Nigeria disclosed the figures in its unaudited financial results for the six months ended June 30, 2026, which were filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Thursday. The company reported that data revenue reached “₦1.699tn during the six-month period, up from ₦1.229tn recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, representing an increase of about 38.3 per cent.” Data remained MTN Nigeria’s biggest source of revenue during the period, ahead of voice services, which generated ₦897.14 billion, while SMS services contributed ₦112.68 billion.   ABUJA, July 30 - Nigeria's arms control agency said ​on Thursday it destroyed ‌2,819 illicit, obsolete and decommissioned weapons in a bid to ​curb insecurity fuelled by ​the proliferation of illegal arms. Agency ⁠chief Johnson Kokumo said ​the weapons were destroyed ​beyond recovery in a public exercise aimed at preventing them from ​re-entering circulation. The destruction comes ​as Nigeria battles banditry, kidnappings, insurgency ‌and ⁠communal violence, which authorities say are sustained by the proliferation of illicit weapons. Officials said ​more ​than ⁠21,000 illicit weapons have been seized since ​the agency was established ​in ⁠2021 and more than 19,000 destroyed to keep them ⁠out ​of circulation permanently.

  ABUJA, July 30  - Nigeria's finance minister said on Thursday that savings from the removal of fuel subsidies and ​foreign-exchange market reforms had largely been absorbed by higher ‌debt-servicing costs and increased government spending, as officials sought to defend reforms blamed for worsening living conditions. President Bola Tinubu's 2023 reforms won backing ​from investors and international lenders, but drove up living ​costs for millions of Nigerians, raising scrutiny of how ⁠the resulting savings have been used.
