THE HIGHER YOUR SUCCESS THE GREATER YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES.
Tunde dreamed of becoming someone important. He often watched the village chief ride through town on a tall horse, surrounded by guards and respect.
“One day,” Tunde would say, “I want people to know my name.”
Years passed, and Tunde worked harder than anyone else. He studied by candlelight, learned from travelers, and eventually left the village to build a trading business in the city.
At first, success felt wonderful.
He bought fine clothes. People praised him. Merchants bowed when he entered rooms. Soon he became the richest young man in the region. Newspapers wrote about him. Even the village chief invited him as an honored guest.
One rainy season, disaster struck the village. The river overflowed, destroying farms and homes. Hungry families waited for help.
The villagers looked toward the chief first, but the chief had little money and few supplies. Then everyone turned their eyes to Tunde.
“Surely he will help,” they whispered.
Tunde suddenly understood something he had never realized before: when he was poor, his mistakes affected only himself. But now, his choices affected hundreds of people.
He could ignore them and keep his wealth safe. Or he could accept the burden that came with his success.
That night, Tunde opened his warehouses. He sent food, blankets, and medicine to the village. He paid workers to rebuild homes and repair the bridge washed away by the flood.
His friends warned him.
“You’ll lose a fortune doing this.”
Tunde replied,
“What is the value of success if it cannot protect others?”
Months later, the village recovered. The people respected Tunde more than ever — not because he was rich, but because he carried the weight that came with being rich.
An old teacher who once taught Tunde smiled and said:
“Many people want the crown, but few understand that every crown is heavy.”
And from that day on, Tunde learned that success is not just about rising higher than others — it is about becoming responsible for more than yourself.
The higher your success, the greater your responsibility.
