WHY MR TORTOISE HAD A SHELL.
Long ago, before the forests were crowded and before rivers learned their paths, Mr. Tortoise had no shell at all.
He was small, soft, and proud.
Among all the animals in the Great Green Forest, Mr. Tortoise believed he was the wisest creature alive. He walked slowly, spoke carefully, and loved giving advice nobody asked for.
One hot season, news spread through the forest that the Sky King was hosting a grand feast above the clouds. Every bird and animal was invited.
The animals became excited.
“What food will they serve?” Monkey wondered.
“Maybe golden fruits!” shouted Parrot.
But there was one problem.
Only creatures with wings could reach the Sky Kingdom.
Mr. Tortoise desperately wanted to attend. More than food, he wanted everyone to admire his cleverness.
So he gathered the birds beneath a giant iroko tree.
“My dear friends,” he said smoothly, “if each of you lends me one feather, I can make wings and join the feast. When we arrive, I shall speak on behalf of all of us.”
The birds agreed because they trusted him.
Eagle gave a strong feather. Dove gave a white one. Peacock proudly offered a colorful feather. Soon, Mr. Tortoise built magnificent wings for himself.
Before leaving, he even chose a new name.
“From today,” he announced proudly, “call me All of You.”
The birds looked confused, but Mr. Tortoise only smiled mysteriously.
Together they flew into the sky until they reached the palace of the Sky King. Music echoed through the clouds, and tables overflowed with roasted yams, honey cakes, fruits, and soups richer than anything the animals had ever seen.
Then the Sky King spoke.
“Welcome, honored guests! This feast is prepared for all of you.”
Immediately, Mr. Tortoise stepped forward.
“You heard him,” he declared confidently. “The feast is for All of You. And that is my name.”
Before the shocked birds could protest, Mr. Tortoise rushed to the tables and ate greedily. He swallowed the sweetest fruits, drank the finest wine, and stuffed himself until barely anything remained.
The birds stared at him in anger.
“You tricked us!” cried Sparrow.
“You used our kindness!” shouted Eagle.
One by one, the birds collected their feathers from Mr. Tortoise’s wings and flew back home, leaving him stranded in the Sky Kingdom.
Mr. Tortoise suddenly realized the terrible danger.
Without wings, he could not return to Earth.
Panic filled his heart.
Below, far beneath the clouds, he spotted his wife near their home.
“Wife!” he shouted desperately. “Bring every soft thing you can find! Gather pillows, cloth, leaves, and cotton! I must jump down!”
His wife hurried to prepare a soft landing.
But the birds, still furious, secretly told her something different.
“Tell her to place hard stones instead,” they whispered.
When Mr. Tortoise saw the ground prepared below, he closed his eyes and jumped.
CRACK!
He hit the ground so hard that his body shattered into many pieces.
The animals rushed to help him. Carefully, they gathered the broken pieces and patched them back together.
But the cracks never disappeared.
From that day onward, Mr. Tortoise carried a hard shell on his back — marked forever with lines and patterns from the terrible fall.
And that, the elders say, is why tortoises have shells today.
Moral lesson
Greed destroys trust
Cleverness without honesty leads to trouble
Kindness should never be abused
Pride often comes before a fall.
