"The president has no right according to Shettima to suspend a councillor talk more of a governor." -Okonkwo

Kenneth Okonkwo, a lawyer, has reacted after the Supreme Court made a pronouncement that the president has the power to declare a state of emergency and suspend elected officials like governors and lawmakers.
In a video shared by Symfoni TV on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Okonkwo said Vice President Kashim Shettima had stated that the president has no power to suspend even a councilor.
Okonkwo said he does not agree with the pronouncement by the Supreme Court and believes that the president does not have the authority to suspend a councilor, a state governor or elected lawmakers.
In Okonkwo’s words: “The president has no right, according to Shettima Vice President of Nigeria, to suspend a councilor talk more of a governor, talk more of elected representative of the people. First of all that is an affront to separation of power, that is an affront to federalism and that is an affront to rule of law”
