THE CLEVER TORTOISE.

In a lush green forest beside a sparkling river lived a tortoise named Timi. He was not the strongest animal in the forest, nor the fastest. In fact, many animals often laughed at how slowly he moved.

The monkeys swung swiftly through the trees.

The antelopes raced across the grasslands.

Even the rabbits teased him.

"Timi," they would laugh, "by the time you reach the river, we'll have gone there and back ten times!"

Timi never became angry. He simply smiled and continued on his way.

One year, a terrible drought struck the forest. The streams dried up, and the animals struggled to find water. Day after day, they searched, but every pond and puddle had disappeared.

One morning, the animals gathered beneath a giant baobab tree.

"We must find water soon," said the lion. "Our forest cannot survive much longer."

The monkeys volunteered to search the treetops.

The antelopes explored distant plains.

The birds flew across valleys and hills.

Yet none of them found water.

As the animals argued about what to do next, Timi slowly raised his head.

"I may know where we can find water," he said.

The animals laughed.

"You?" said a rabbit. "How could the slowest animal know something we don't?"

But Timi remained calm.

Years earlier, while wandering through the forest, he had discovered an ancient spring hidden behind a wall of thick bushes. Because he moved slowly and carefully, he noticed things that faster animals often overlooked.

"Follow me," he said.

Though doubtful, the animals agreed because they had no better plan.

Timi led them through winding paths, around fallen trees, and across rocky ground. The journey seemed endless.

Some animals complained.

Others wanted to turn back.

But Timi continued steadily.

Finally, they reached a hidden valley. Behind a curtain of vines flowed a clear spring of fresh water.

The animals stared in amazement.

"There really is water!" cried the monkeys.

"We are saved!" shouted the antelopes.

The forest animals drank gratefully and celebrated their good fortune.

That evening, the lion called everyone together.

"We were foolish to judge Timi by how fast he moved," he said. "His patience and careful observation saved us all."

From that day forward, the animals respected the tortoise.

Whenever there was a difficult problem, they sought his advice first.

And Timi, as always, simply smiled.

For he knew something the others had finally learned:

Being clever is often more valuable than being fast.

Moral:

Wisdom, patience, and careful thinking can achieve what speed and strength cannot.
