THE TALKING CALABASH.
Long ago, in a small village surrounded by forests and rivers, there lived a poor farmer named Kofi. Though he owned little, he was known for his kindness and honesty.
One dry season, while searching for water deep in the forest, Kofi discovered an old calabash lying beneath a giant baobab tree. As he picked it up, a voice suddenly spoke:
"Kind man, fill me with clean water, and I will reward you."
Startled but curious, Kofi carried the calabash to a stream and filled it with fresh water. To his amazement, when he looked inside, the water had turned into shining gold coins.
Kofi took only a few coins and returned home. The next day, he filled the calabash again, and once more it produced gold. Soon, he had enough money to repair his house, help his neighbors, and provide food for the village.
News of the magical calabash spread quickly.
A greedy merchant named Badu heard the story and demanded to know Kofi's secret. When he learned about the calabash, he stole it during the night and rushed into the forest.
"Make me rich!" he shouted.
He filled the calabash with muddy water from a swamp and waited eagerly. But instead of gold, hundreds of buzzing bees burst out of the calabash and chased him through the forest. He ran all the way back to the village, covered in stings and shame.
The next morning, the calabash mysteriously returned to Kofi. The voice spoke once more:
"Kindness brings blessings. Greed brings trouble."
From that day on, Kofi continued to use the calabash wisely, helping others whenever he could. The village prospered, and the story of the talking calabash was passed down through generations as a reminder that a good heart is worth more than gold.
Moral: Wealth gained through kindness lasts longer than wealth sought through greed.
